Time on these apps can contribute to more than just hopes of a relationship. New studies are finding that people who spend more time on dating apps have a higher level of anxiety and have a negative self-image. You start to compare yourself to others, and when you don’t get a match, you start thinking about all of the reasons you didn’t, thus leading to possible anxiety, which can lead to eating disorders, and so on.
Now, much like with social media apps, sometimes just logging out or turning off notifications can help ease your anxiety because you aren’t comparing yourself to others anymore. But what if you still want to be on the app? You need to develop a positive self-image.
Having a positive self image can take some time, but here are some strategies to help you. Avoiding exaggerations, especially negative ones, is so important. Our minds tend to make things seem much worse than they actually are. Free your mind and put all of your focus towards positive thoughts. Another very useful strategy is giving yourself a break. Nobody is perfect, and who cares if you’re different from somebody? Be proud of your differences.
Dating apps can produce serious side effects on our mental health, and it’s important that we realize when it’s happening. When we start feeling bad about ourselves, we need to remember the ways in which we are good, not bad. Having positive thoughts and a positive self-image can make all the difference in how we feel.
