We’ve all heard the spill on fancy detoxifications (detoxes) and how good they are for us. Is it all the truth, though?
If you’ve ever watched TV, read a magazine, or scrolled through social media, chances are you’ve seen the word detox. Detoxes are supposed to help cleanse our bodies of toxins-these toxins being alcohol, caffeine, etc. Examples of detoxes include drinking nothing but tea, saltwater, and honey. While they might sound great, detoxes aren’t all they’re made out to be.
The literal definition of a toxin is an antigenic poison or venom of plant or animal origin, especially one produced by or derived from microorganisms and causing disease when present at low concentration in the body. I don’t think these are the kinds of toxins detoxes are aimed at. Detox advocates claim that toxins such as caffeine, alcohol, and red meat can cause fatigue, depression, rashes, and obesity. While some of these “toxins” might partially contribute to some of these symptoms, most don’t. Controlling what you eat and how you eat it is the only way to fight your food addiction, not by completely limiting foods.
Your Body Is a Well-Working Machine.
Your body doesn’t want or need your help when it comes to detoxifying. Your skin, your airways, and your intestines do a great job of detoxifying potentially harmful things out of your body. Drastically changing your diet could harm, not help your bodily functions. Getting enough sleep, drinking water, and eating healthy help. There’s no science-based evidence that shows detoxes help your body perform. Stick to a healthy diet to combat your food addiction; don’t make drastic changes.
So, Detoxes don’t work?
The answer is yes and no. The detoxes I talked about above are the detoxes that cost a fortune and cause more harm than anything. While ridding yourself of almost everything you eat isn’t a good idea, ridding yourself of something like sugar can help. Try going sugar-free and see how your body and mind feel after awhile. Also, trying a mind “detox” wouldn’t kill you either. While detox isn’t probably the best word to use for it, clearing your mind and meditating can help with so much, including food addiction. Don’t try a detox just because a celebrity says to. Make your own choices about what you’re going to eat and how you’re going to eat. Don’t fight your body when it comes to losing weight. Be happy and be healthy.
