Comfort Zone Stretch!

Step out of your comfort zone. 

On the last weekend of my vacation, my cousin and I decided to do some hiking in Big Sur. Now, if you know me, “girl who hikes” might not be the very first words to describe me. And, I always try to practice what I preach – so out of my comfort zone I stepped, and we had an amazing time.

On our way back – tired and hungry – we found a beautiful spot on Highway 1 that overlooked the ocean to have our lunch. When we parked, we saw a small opening to a staircase. My cousin is far more daring and nature-loving than me, and before I knew it, she was hiking (again!) down a very rocky, steep hill that had very little navigation.

My very first thought? “No.” I had done my “outside of my comfort zone” for the day, I was tired, and, mostly, I was scared! Though my years of morbid obesity are far behind me, my inner-insecure-scared-fat-girl is always the first to pipe up in these scenarios and she wasn’t having it. I figured I would sit and eat my lunch and let my cousin explore.

Luckily, I keep you in my heart all of the time, Buddies. I thought of you and what I wish for you always – FULL freedom from your issues with food and weight. Inadvertently, my issues with food and weight, my ghosts-of-morbidly-obese-past were holding me hostage in this very minute. I wasn’t having it.

I heard my cousin yell, “Come on, it’s beautiful down here!” I took a big deep breath, and with very little grace, I trekked down – getting dirty, and sweaty – just like life. As for outcome? All I can say is: wow wow and more wow (scroll down to the bottom of the email for full WOW status).

I rarely regret stepping out of my comfort zone and pushing myself past where my “not enoughs”, fear of rejection and humiliation live. Every time I push, my heart shines brighter, my confidence grows, and I know myself in a whole new way. 

All that by saying yes when I really want to say no. By trusting the process. And after I make choices like that, I’m just not that hungry; I’ve been fed by life. If we are going to heal from our food and weight issues, we want lives with expanded comfort zones. What can you do this week in the name of stretching your comfort zone?
