Dieting is on the rise.
- 49% of American adults surveyed between 2013 and 2016 reported trying to lose weight at some point during the prior 12 months, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).
- A recent article by Food Revolution pointed out that the number of vegans in the U.S. has increased by 600% in the last three years.
These numbers might sound threatening, but in reality, they’re harmless. As I said in a previous post, social media has become such a major part of our food and eating choice-making. We see so many people on a certain diet and assume we need to be on that diet just because of its popularity. But that’s not going to solve your problems. Overcoming food addiction and overeating is about YOU.
Food addiction is exactly what it sounds like: addiction to food. Simply dieting isn’t going to solve all of your problems. Sure you can go vegan, but what’s keeping you from eating twice the amount that you usually eat?? Anyone can stop eating meat and dairy but is that really going to stop you from still overeating? I’m not dissing any of these diets, but how can YOU actually make a change?
Decide what’s best for you. Everyone is different, so finding what works for you might take some time. Diet-wise, we always recommend flour and sugar-free. Sugar harms your body in ways you could never imagine and it plays a major part in food addiction. There are many recipes out there, but the key is control.
Plan your meals. Planning your meals keeps you from binge eating and overeating, something that a diet can’t do. When you know when and what you are going to eat, you leave no room for binge eating. Binge eating is continuous eating over a period of time, so when you schedule exactly when you are going to eat, you get back in control.
Dieting isn’t always the answer. But when you do diet, pick what’s right for you and always plan out your meals. Don’t let the diet take the blame for you not becoming any healthier. Take responsibility and then see the difference.
