Won’t You Be My Neighbor

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads out there and to you Buddies taking on the role of Dad to something or someone in need. #goyou

Speaking of Dads, I saw a fantastic documentary last night about Fred Rogersof “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood” – one of my childhood faves. What an amazing man, and an amazing example of what pure love, kindness and presence can do to shape a world. It got me thinking about an not-so-talked about skill we sometimes forget to use. One that is so powerful for our recovery from food and weight issues: being of service.

I talk on and on and on about our issues food and weight being like a theif and a terrorist – they steal from us and hold us hostage from being our very best selves. They make us horde our time, our energy and our love. We begin to believe and act in the name of scarcity. And that makes us behave selfishly, and that makes us feel very lonely… and hungry.

Mr. Rogers said it best: “If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.”

When we are fogged out with the food, or being terrorized by our eating disorders, we can forget that this big beautiful world exists. It needs our help and needs our light.  Being of service reminds us that this journey is waaaaayyyyy bigger than our singular experience. It grows our hearts and souls.

By being of service, we can wholeheartedly remember that we are not alone. And that actually helps us to suffer less. Which in turn, helps us to live in integrity and in our wisest mind. And if that’s not the greatest of win-win-win situations, I don’t know what is.

Love is always the answer, Buddies. #ThanksMrRogers
