Sugar: The Truth Aint So Sweet!

The Skinny on SUGAR:

Added sugar is the not-so-sweet trick the makers of processed foods use to get you hooked. In 2005, Princeton researchers found that eating sugar triggers the release of opioids, neurotransmitters that light up your brain’s pleasure center. Addictive drugs like morphine and heroin stimulate those same pleasure pathways. Scary fact? After 21 days on a high-sugar diet, you could start showing signs of withdrawal—chattering teeth, anxiety, and depression—when sugar is taken away.  How the addictive nature of sugar is still a topic of discussion is mind blowing and yet, addicts always protect their substance, and America is full of closet sugar addicts.

Added sugars, specifically fructose from table sugar and the high-fructose corn syrup found in most processed foods, block the hormonal signal that tells your brain it’s time to stop eating. The result? Weight gain from feeling chronically unsatisfied.  Binge eating is a direct result of added sugars, add in the addiction piece and the chase is on.

UH OHHH, Another thing: Starch Can Equal Sugar

Think you don’t have a sweet tooth, but crave bagels, chips, or french fries? These starchy foods are complex carbs that the body breaks down into simple sugars. Eaten without better foods, starches can make blood sugar surge and crash like sugar. Highly refined starches like white bread, pretzels, crackers, and pasta are in effect, metabolically… thats right- Sugar.
