We talk a lot about mindfulness at Beacon, and some wonder- What does being one-mindful have to do with my sugar addiction?
I was talking with some Buddies in a Beacon group the other night and we got on the subject of skills – specifically watching TV. I asked the group if they were watching TV or if they were watching while phone-checking, game-playing, texting,
ordering stuff and working and, and, and. Their answer was the latter – and maybe the key to why your skills aren’t working as well as you hoped. The conversation reminded me of a skill that superceded all of the skills and one that we definitely need for resolving our issues with sugar addiction: being one-mindful.
Sounds a little sci-fi-let-the-force-be-with-
you, right? Well, in some ways it is and in other ways it totally isn’t. One mindful simply means doing one thing at a time with your full attention. It means when you are doing something, doing only that one thing without allowing yourself to get distracted. Easy peasy, right? Um … no.
Why is being one mindful sooooooo important in finding solutions to our issues with food and weight? Here’s the sales pitch: one-mindedness helps with concentration and focus. It helps with keeping you on-task and not allowing little termite distractions to get in the way of your long-term success during sugar addiction treatment recovery. Hello? Did I not just describe every experience that has thwarted your success? Also, for those of you looking to be overall successful, doing one thing at a time is always more effective than multi-tasking. Just ask science.
Think one-mindfulness may be harder than learning quantum physics? No worries, Buddies. Getting one-mindful is, as we say at Beacon, a problem to be solved:
Check-in. To solve a problem we have to know a problem: do you know if you are being one mindful or not? If you don’t know, it’s safe to say you may be too distracted to know – and that’s the anti-one-mindful. Now that we have that squared away….
Practice practice practice. Great news! You don’t get struck one-minded, you practice it! There are lots of great ways to do that – straight meditation, doing mindfulness walks where your whole concentration is on your feet on the ground, mindfully washing your hands with complete focus, mindfully listening to music – focusing only on the lyrics or on the background. The list is endless and practice is everywhere. #winwinwin
Can you leave your phone out of it? But seriously. Having some analog time does a wise mind good. You can’t be without distraction if you’re not without distraction – you feel me? I love me some technology, but it sure takes us away from getting one-minded. Can you make a commitment to leave your phone in the other room while you’re practicing this skill or even turn it off for an hour this week?
I was on a plane last night that (gasp!) didn’t have any internet! After taking some deep breaths, I realized I had an opportunity to power down and practice my skills! Woot woot! Let me tell you, I watched a movie with all of my attention and was able to really focus, relax, and enjoy. Who knew?
